Been busy in the studio working on the first two paintings that I will be taking to the conference in the UK later this month

Starting a new work is always very exciting and there is nothing like the anticipation of a large blank piece of canvas.

It is very satisfying to start the day with a blank canvas and to finish with a series of marks which hint at the promise of a successful work

Finalist in Cliftons Art Prize

Just found out my painting “Intersection II’ below has been selected by a panel of International judges as a finalist for Wellington in the Cliftons Art Prize 2012. YAH

The award evening is in Wellington on the 27th June.

Wandering around Kuala Lumpur international airport

I had a fascinating time exploring the non-places of Kuala Lumpur. I experienced a number of bus and train stations and both international airports. I was at the KLIA airport for 3 days and undertook a variety of planned and random activities.

The KLIA international airport was a model non-place – 5 floors of shiny, grey toned and vast spaces with a huge number of passengers transitioning through the various steps of departure or arrival.

There was a marked difference between the departure floor and the arrival level. There was an air of hushed anticipation in the vast departures area (216 check-in counters), the lights were quite dim and there was limited seating so people kept transitioning through the space. The arrivals area on the other hand was a much brighter and smaller space and was very hectic and nosy.

The very ‘global’ behaviour at the airport in terms of queue ettiquette was in total contrast to the hustle and bustle of queueing on the streets of Malaysia.

Heading to England . . .

I am excited to announce that I have been invited to take part in a conference in England this May. The conference ‘Affective Landscapes’ will be held at the University of Derby in England. The programme includes 72 international speakers, by invitation, and the theme has attracted strong academic and general interest on the interaction between place, or non-place, and the psyche of the individual. Speakers will include specialists from the fields of cultural studies, literary studies, cultural politics/history, creative writing, film and media studies, photography and fine art.

I will be the only participant from New Zealand and will present a paper on my art practice as part of a panel on the Non-Place. My paper is in two parts, firstly it will discuss an urban wandering project I am about to undertake in KL and then how I translated those urban experiences into a series of new paintings back in my studio in Mapua. I will also be exhibiting the KL paintings in England.
